Its name comes from the Anglo-Saxon word Seolfer but it’s also related to the German word Silber and the Dutch word Zilfer. Its chemical symbol, Ag, derives from the Latin word for silver, Argentum. Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver with the remainder being copper and a nominal amount of other base metal.
