Labradorite is named for where it was found in Labrador, a Canadian province on the Isle of Paul. Inuits once called labradorite a “fire stone” and would use powdered forms to help cure ailments.

Labradorite gemstones are plagioclase minerals. Plagioclase minerals are feldspars that range from pure albite to pure anthorite. Labradorite is most commonly known for its brilliant flashes of colour called labradoressence caused by lamellar twinning inside the crystal.

Labradorite is an important feldspar gemstone. It often displays a beautiful iridescent play of colours, which can move as the stone is rotated. Labradorite gemstones usually have a dark base colour with metallic-looking colour plays of blue, green.
