Peridot

Peridot occurs in silica-poor igneous rocks, such as basalts. Some peridot is found in volcanic areas, while some are found embedded in meteorites.

The shade and depth of green color present in peridot is dependent on the proportion of iron present in the stone, and the deeper the green, the smaller the amount of iron that is present.

As with many precious gems, peridot occurs most commonly in pebble-sized specimens that have been weathered by tens of thousands of years of erosion in gemstone veins. New sources of peridot include Arizona, Mexico, Oregon, Norway, Pakistan, Russia and Sri Lanka. The Canary Islands, China, Brazil, Norway, Hawaii, Australia, Brazil and South Africa provide the finest gem quality peridot stones.

Aquamarine

Aquamarine, a splendid blue gemstone whose name originates from the Italian word for seawater, embodies the splendor of the sea. A member of the beryl family, aquamarine is a sister to the rich green emerald. It can be found in a range of pale blue hues and aqua green colors. Legends refer to aquamarine as the treasure of Atlantis.

Traditionally, aquamarine is also the birthstone for March.

Aquamarine is a beryl–a relatively rare silicate mineral found in igneous and metamorphic rocks around the world–and a blue-green sister to the deep green emerald. Other beryl stones include morganite (pink), heliodor (yellow/yellow-green), goshenite (colorless) and maxixe* (deep blue). Aquamarine gems are frequently less included or fractured than emeralds, making larger stones easier to find.

The natural blue and green colors of aquamarine come from ferrous iron and metallic ions. Aquamarine gemstones are found in a number of exotic places including Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan and Mozambique, and the most brilliant blue varieties of the gemstones available today come from Brazil.

Labradorite

Labradorite is named for where it was found in Labrador, a Canadian province on the Isle of Paul. Inuits once called labradorite a “fire stone” and would use powdered forms to help cure ailments. According to Inuit legend, a warrior saw the Northern Lights trapped in the rocks and struck them with his spear to free some of the lights.

Labradorite is considered a tremendously spiritual stone, especially helpful for people who tend to overwork. It helps an individual regain energy while aiding the body and spirit in healing itself.

Labradorite gemstones are a plagioclase mineral. Plagioclase minerals are feldspars that range from pure albite to pure anthorite. The gem labradorite falls into the 50-70% anthorite category with a 50-70% calcium to 30-50% sodium structure. Labradorite is most commonly known for its brilliant flashes of color called labradoressence caused by lamellar twinning inside the crystal. These twin lamellae structures are compatible at high temperatures, but not at low temperatures, resulting in separation and layering as the gemstone is formed. The extra colors you see in labradorite are caused by refracted light traveling at different speeds through the layers and coming out as a different wave length.
