London Blue Topaz

A blue gemstone with good hardness and brilliance tends to be rare and fairly expensive. This is especially true of the darker blue gems, such as sapphire, tanzanite, and spinel.

It is not surprising then that blue topaz has become one of the top-selling gems in the jewelry business. Blue topaz is unusual in offering excellent hardness (8 on the Mohs scale) and brilliance at a very reasonable cost.

Blue topaz can be found in both lighter and darker tones, usually known in the trade as sky blue topaz, Swiss blue topaz, and London blue topaz. As in the case of other blue gems, the more saturated blues tend to have a higher value. So in topaz, it is the London blue that usually regarded as the most valuable

Topaz is currently found in Brazil, Nigeria, Australia, Myanmar, and Mexico.

Moonstone

Moonstone, by its very name, has been connected to the moon and to the subconscious and unconscious. Wherever we go on Earth, the moon is with us, no matter where or how far our journey takes us–which is why it was a popular stone for protecting travelers.

This gem is an alternate birthstone for June.

This gemstone is found all over the world–from Sri Lanka, to Australia, India, Tanzania, the United States, and countries between.

Labradorite

Labradorite is named for where it was found in Labrador, a Canadian province on the Isle of Paul. Inuits once called labradorite a “fire stone” and would use powdered forms to help cure ailments. According to Inuit legend, a warrior saw the Northern Lights trapped in the rocks and struck them with his spear to free some of the lights.

Labradorite is considered a tremendously spiritual stone, especially helpful for people who tend to overwork. It helps an individual regain energy while aiding the body and spirit in healing itself.

Labradorite gemstones are a plagioclase mineral. Plagioclase minerals are feldspars that range from pure albite to pure anthorite. The gem labradorite falls into the 50-70% anthorite category with a 50-70% calcium to 30-50% sodium structure. Labradorite is most commonly known for its brilliant flashes of color called labradoressence caused by lamellar twinning inside the crystal. These twin lamellae structures are compatible at high temperatures, but not at low temperatures, resulting in separation and layering as the gemstone is formed. The extra colors you see in labradorite are caused by refracted light traveling at different speeds through the layers and coming out as a different wave length.

Tourmaline

Though tourmaline has been found in parts of Africa and Europe, the most prominent mine locations are established in North and South America.

The pink tourmaline’s status as the October birthstone is shared with the opal, and there are many unique metaphysical properties for each member of the tourmaline gemstone family.

Tourmaline comes in a wide family of varieties. The red colors are called rubellite and blue colors areindicolite. Other colored tourmaline names are verdite for greens, dravite for browns, achroite for the rare colorless tourmalines, schorl for the most common blacks and paraiba for a particularly rare vivid green variety.
